One of the easiest orchids to grow indoors is the Phal (Phalaenopsis) orchid.  This orchid has delicate flowers on a single stem and the flowers come in colors such as white, pink, red, purple or yellow.

One of the best tips around whether growing orchids indoors or outdoors is to grow your orchid in a special orchid pot.  These pots have the right kind of drainage holes for orchids.  Orchids need the water in their pot to drain away quickly and easily, which may not always happen if you use a regular plant pot for your orchids.  So if you want your orchid to be healthy, grow it in an orchid pot.

It’s important that you use the right kind of orchid medium in your pot.  This could be charcoal, tree bark or sphagnum moss.  When you buy your orchid, ask what kind of orchid medium is in the pot.  Orchid medium is just a fancy term for the organic material that’s used to cover the roots of the orchid.

You need to know what kind of orchid medium to use, so that when you repot your orchid (usually every two to three years depending on the variety) you know what kind of organic material to use in the new pot.

Sunlight and water are very important when growing orchids indoors.  For example, the Phal orchid needs east facing light when grown indoors as it can’t handle strong sunlight.  The Phal also needs some shade as well.  So if you place your Phal near an east facing window, it will probably get all the light it needs.

When growing orchids indoors, you may not get enough sunlight in your house, especially in winter.  This is where artificial lights, (aka grow lights) can come in handy.  Just make sure you keep the lights at least one foot away from your orchids to prevent any problems.

The length of time you need to turn on the artificial lights each day depends on the type of orchids you have, so when you buy your orchid make sure you understand the specific light requirement that it needs.

Orchids need to be watered regularly.  Some varieties like the Phal, only need to be watered once or twice per week; more often in hot weather.  Other kinds may only need to be watered once every ten days.

So when growing orchids indoors, make sure you give your plant enough water, but it’s also important that you don’t over water it.  If you over water your orchid, the roots can get wet and soggy and may eventually rot.

Once you strike the right balance between adequate sunlight and watering, your orchid should thrive and thank you by flowering.  So if you’ve always wanted to grow orchids indoors, why not start today?
