Growing orchids can be very rewarding, even for the beginner gardener. But it’s important that you know how to water orchids correctly. If you give them too much water, they can become waterlogged, but if you give them too little, they can dry out and die. So it’s important to get the balance right when watering your orchids.
Different species of orchids require different amounts of water. So when you buy your orchid from the garden center, ask a staff member how often you should water it. If they don’t know, you can always search online for the information, as long as you get it from a reputable source.

Orchids originated from the tropics, where the climate is warm and humid. The perfect climate for orchids can be 80 percent humidity. This level of humidity can be very uncomfortable for humans, but orchids love humid, moist conditions. So if you’re keeping your orchid inside your home and you run your air conditioner because the weather is too hot and humid for you, you may be changing your orchid’s microclimate from perfect to not so perfect.
So what can you do?
Well, one way to increase humidity for orchids is to get a deep saucer and put some pebbles in it. Now sit your orchid pot on top of the pebbles. If you can pour some water into the saucer without the water touching your orchid pot, you can create some nice humidity for your orchid.
Depending on the type of orchids you have, you may only need to water them every seven to ten days. Often, orchids look dried out and in need of watering when in fact they don’t need watering for another couple of days. This is because although the potting bark inside the pot may look dry, it’s efficient at holding moisture. So if you’re keeping your orchid inside, then ensure you let the potting bark dry out completely before watering it.
You can also give your orchids some fertilizer from time to time. You should be able to buy special orchid fertilizer, which has all the trace elements orchids need in order to thrive. When you water orchids, you could also set aside some time in order to apply the fertilizer. Just read the directions on the back of the pack, so you don’t accidentally give your orchids too much fertilizer which can harm them.
If you water orchids correctly, and give them enough sunlight, you should be able to grow beautiful orchids quite easily. All orchids need in order to thrive is the right microclimate, the right potting medium such as tree bark or sphagnum moss, and the right amount of sunlight. You can also give them a little fertilizer occasionally. If you do all these things, then get ready to enjoy some beautiful flowers!
