The terrestrial orchid grows in the ground, although some sub-species are semi-terrestrial which means they can grow in the ground and on trees and rocks. The epiphytes orchid grows in rocks, trees or on poles.
One popular species of the terrestrial orchid is the Cymbidium orchid. This flower is also very popular in wedding bouquets. It has a large flower head, is wilt-resistant and is white, pink, pale green or yellow.
Cymbidium orchids can be easy to grow and are a popular beginner’s choice. There are 40 species of this orchid and over 1,000 hybrids. This orchid is semi-terrestrial and can be grown in decayed leaves or the humus of rotted wood, as well as in soil.
The Dendrobium orchid is a well known epiphytes orchid. It is also easy to grow, but requires a bit more attention than the Cymbidium orchid. The Dendrobium does not bloom as well as the Cymbidium, though. You will need to keep your Dendrobiums moist and they will thrive in a warm and humid region.
The Phalaenopsis orchid is often recommended as a beginner’s orchid and is also an epiphytes. You can grow Phalaenopsis orchids inside or outside and they love a mixture of sunlight and shade. If you’re growing this orchid inside the home, then try to place it near an east facing window. The Phalaenopsis blooms for two to three months each year. Make sure you water it once or twice per week, more often in hot weather.
Epiphytic orchids grow on trees, rocks or even on poles. Although their roots may be attached to the tree, they do not receive any nourishment from the tree. Their nourishment comes from the organic material that has gathered between the roots of the orchid and the bark of the tree. If there is a dry period, then the orchid is self-sustaining.
Orchid types such as the above species can all be grown by the average gardener. Even if you don’t have a backyard, you can grow some varieties in your home or office, such as the Phalaenopsis.
It’s easy to become addicted to growing orchids. Cattleya orchids are also known as the ‘corsage orchid’ and have beautiful flowers. You can even grow this orchid in your backyard in a pot. They like plenty of sunlight and need to be watered twice per week. Of course, if you’re experiencing hot weather, then you water it more often.
