Phal orchids have single stemmed, fragile looking flowers.  They come in the following colors:  pink, red, purple, white and yellow.  You may have seen them in restaurants, offices and on magazine covers.

There are 60 different species of Phal orchids, and thousands of hybrids.  One popular hybrid of this orchid is called the Moth orchid.

So how do you look after a Phal orchid?

Phals are usually grown in pots.  Using a special orchid pot is a good idea, as orchid pots have the right kind of drainage holes for orchids.  Orchids need the water to drain away from their roots quickly and easily.

You can use tree bark or sphagnum moss as the growing medium.  The Phal likes sunlight but also some shade, so don’t place it directly in strong sunlight.

If your orchid is inside the home, place it near an east facing window, so it doesn’t get scorched by strong sunlight.

If you don’t get much sunlight in your house, then you can use grow lights instead.  Just make sure you don’t place your Phal any closer than one foot from the lights, otherwise the artificial lights will be too strong for your orchid.

All orchids need watering but the Phal orchid only needs watering once or twice per week.  Of course, if it’s summer, then it will need to be watered more frequently.  One easy way of determining whether your orchid needs watering is to stick your finger into the potting medium.   For a healthy Phal, the potting medium should never dry out completely.  So if it feels dry, water your orchid immediately.  If you see white roots, then it means your Phal needs watering ASAP!

Orchids don’t like to be over watered, and this applies to the Phal as well.  If an orchid has soggy, waterlogged roots, the roots can rot away and the orchid may end up dying from too much water.

Your Phal orchid is doing well if it has dark green leaves.  The underside of the leaves may have red streaks.

You may like to give it some fertilizer every so often.  Make sure the fertilizer you buy is specifically for orchids and is water soluble.  Just follow the directions on the pack so you’re administering the fertilizer correctly.

If you follow the above tips for your Phal orchid, you should be rewarded with beautiful, exotic blooms for two to three months of the year.  So if you’d like to try growing orchids, why not buy a Phal today?
